Job Interviews, most of us cringe when we hear those daunting words. Job Interviews are perhaps the most stressful portion of the job search process. Considering these facts, we do everything necessary in order to prepare for our job interviews, we look at videos for tips, read every article we can etc. Even if you are well prepared and you have your questions down to a “T”, there is still a huge chance that you will suck at your next interview. Lets be honest, most of us suck at job interviews but we don’t know why! We go on multiple job interviews and we never seem to get a call back from the employer. The fact that we get called in for a job interview obviously means they have some interest in us but
why aren’t we getting a call back? The conclusion must be that we just suck at job interviews, which is ok because most of us do but we don’t know why. In this post, I want to let you know why you suck at job interviews and how to do better at job interviews.
Most of us can do all of the research in the world; we can learn every single thing about the company as possible. You can scour the web searching for every piece of in formation about every single employee. You can talk to everybody you know about the position you’re applying for. You study the top interview tips, resume tips, career advice, LinkedIn
advice; you can meet the CEO of the company and be best of friends. You can do ALL of the above and you can still fail at your next job interview and not receive the job offer.
Don’t get me wrong, research is extremely important but many job seekers believe that research is all you need to be successful at a job interview. Don’t forget, all of the research you’ve done isn’t going to speak for itself during the actual job interview.
At the end of the day, you are in the hot seat and its up to you to display to them employer, why you’re thebest person for the position. You cannot do this if you don’t know how to sell!
The Reason you don't do well at job interviews!
The reason you will suck at your next job interview is because you are not a good salesman. Yes! That is the reason you suck at interviews because you can’t sell. It could be nerves, lack of confidence, stress or other external pressures contributing to your inability to remain calm. Being a good salesman is the key to being successful on your next interview. Here is why you will suck at your next interview if you can’t sell:
You are a product! Think about the last time you went out to the store and bought a product. You looked for a product that was cost effective and beneficial to you. As you looked on the shelf, you saw many products that were related to the product you were seeking, each with different prices, brands, tastes etc. All of the products had different specifications and qualifications specific to your needs, but you only chose the ONE that you knew would benefit you in the long run, the one you liked the most, the one you thought was cost effective.
That’s what a job interview is. Employers are looking for the absolute best product on the market to fill a specific need. They are looking for a product that has longevity, is cost effective, and will benefit them in the long run.
All in all, the employer is the buyer and you are the product. Your job in an interview is to sell your product (yourself) to that buyer (the interviewer).
Once again, you must visualize yourself as a product on a shelf amongst others. You also must visualize the employer as the customer who’s buying the product. What is on your packaging that makes you stand out from the others similar products that are sitting on the shelf right next to you? Are you putting yourself in a position in which your product is not
on the bottom shelf?
How Do I Sell Myself to a Company?
Now, how do you sell yourself to a company you may be asking? Well, there is ONE important question to take note of!
What does that company need?
In order to sell yourself to a company, you first have to find out what is the need. Once you find out what that company needs, you can tailor yourself to be THAT product. The first thing to do is look at the job posting. The job posting is telling you exactly what that company is looking for, they are telling you what requirements are needed, what qualifications are needed, what duties are expected. The company is telling you what product they are looking for, you have to be that product.
How do I become the Product that they want?
In order to become the product that the company wants, you have to tailor yourself to the companies needs. For an example, if a company is looking for an accountant, they are looking for someone who is detail oriented, good with numbers and focused. That is the product they are looking for. They are looking for a product that has those attributes, now is your chance to be that product. With that being said, your answers and how you portray yourself during that
interview should mirror that accountant they are looking for. When answering your questions, make sure you put emphasis on attributes that are attractive to that accountant position. You know they are looking for someone who is detail oriented and good with numbers, so make sure your answers to their questions display these attributes.
All in all, the goal is to fill the need of the employer. You do this by looking at the job posting and doing your research on the company, once you have this information; you have to tailor your resume and yourself to fit the company’s needs.
With that being said, be the best product you can be so the employer would want to buy you..
